As mentioned in our previous article, the highly anticipated T.I.M.E Stories expansion, A Prophecy of Dragons, is almost here! Luckily, we got our hands on a copy, ripped out the shrink wrappings, breathed in the sweet smell of newly opened card board and cards, and had a HELL OF A TIME experiencing the mythical journey and magic of this new story! Don’t worry, I’m keeping this SPOILER-FREE as I’ll only cover our impressions based on our experience as we wielded steel and bolts of energy in our playthrough. A Prophecy of Dragons sets your group of temporal agents on a mission to fix a disturbance to the timeline. This time, you’ll be in a medieval era where different people mingle together and magic exists. Each player will be choosing a receptacle or a character in that time whose body they will be possessing in order to carry out their mission. What’s great about the expansion is that it gives a fresh feel to T.I.M.E. Stories by introducing some new mechanics to the game. Of course, I’ll let you find those out for yourself 😉
Right off the bat, we took a good amount of time selecting our characters as we tried to see which party roles we were taking, trying to get the right mix for our group. “Who’ll be a rogue? How about fighters? Aaaaaand mages? Oh! We there should be a healer!” It was as if we were playing a table top RPG! After the dust settled and the smoke cleared, I found myself facing the character sheet of the gruff-looking warrior! (Yay!) And thus, began our journey.
We had a hell of a time playing through this story, which stayed true to its theme and really made it feel as if we were in the medieval times, especially with the beautiful art depicted in the cards! If you’re looking for battles and skirmishes, you might like this one as you may find yourself bashing heads in and incinerating enemies while rolling those wooden dice. Speaking of which, there were plenty of moments when we were questioning if we were cursed by the dice gods evidenced by our shitty rolls. (Ugh…) Was there a dice rolling class in college we forgot to enroll in? If anybody knows this, please let us know!
Story-wise, A Prophecy of Dragons gave a good narrative, though it could have been better. It DEFINIITELY wasn’t bad… I think our bursts of laughter, sighs of relief, and moments of tension-filled silence while we read through the story texts of the cards proves it. It’s just that it could have been a lot more than what it was. Not complaining though because it definitely still delivered an awesome game experience.
Overall, it was a great gaming experience, one that we’ll definitely remember for all T.I.M.E. (hehe) In my opinion, this is a milestone in the T.I.M.E. Stories series, especially on a meta-level. The game introduced new mechanics that we applaud (some which had us going through the rule book over and over) but, at the end of the day, we each went home with a satisfied grin. Needless to say, I can’t recommend this expansion enough! Definitely a must-play, if you’re interested in a thematic experience. The game is set to release TODAY, March 10, in the US.
