An upcoming Gundam movie will be set in the Philippines

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway releases in Japan this July.

Heads up, Pinoy Gundam fans! The upcoming anime film ‘Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway’ will feature a story that is primarily set in a future version of the Philippines, specifically in the city of Davao.

The upcoming anime film’s Philippine setting was reported by Inquirer Super. According to the report, the film’s setting was announced by producer Naohiro Ogata at a recent fan event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the Gundam franchise.

Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway is the first of a three-part anime film series based on the “Hathaway’s Flash” light novel series. The said light novel series was written by Yoshiyuki Tomino, the director of the original Mobile Suit Gundam movie.

As for its story, Hathaway’s Flash is set in the Universal Century timeline, specifically in UC 105 and follows Hathaway Noa who hides his name under “Mafty Navue Erin” and joins the Mafty terrorist organization. In the film, Mafty is fighting against the Earth Federation, and is able to acquire the powerful Ξ Gundam prototype, which Mafty is able to become the pilot of.

Said to be the “culmination of Gundam’s 40th Anniversary,” Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway releases in Japanese cinemas on July 23, 2020. There’s no word yet on when the film will release internationally.
