It’s been about 43 years since Cucuruz Doan and his “Island of No Return” found its way into the mainstream. Now, we’ll finally be able to see how that fateful episode of Mobile Suit Gundam unfolded, albeit, from a different perspective. Only this time, it’s a full-length movie.

The movie was directed by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko and premiered in Japan last week, June 3, 2022. The story focuses on episode 15 of the 1979 Mobile Suit Gundam series, but from the opposing side. Still, you’ll be seeing all the classic characters, as Amuro Ray will be the one traveling to the mysterious island where he’s bound to meet an even more mysterious figure–the titular Cucuruz Doan.

All the familiar faces of the Earth Federation Forces, Principality of Zeon, and Southern Cross Corps will be making a comeback. You have to admit, seeing Char Aznable and Bright Noa again would be quite refreshing.

Now, if only we could have this scene in circa 2022 quality animation. That would be great.

“Get in the damn robot, Shinj-I mean, Amuro!”

Mobile Suit Gundam: Cucuruz Doan’s Island is coming soon to theaters across the Philippines. Currently though, there’s no word yet on an official release date, nor is there info on which cinemas the film will release in.
