Here’s a quick rundown of the Netflix AnimeJapan 2023 highlights:

Ōoku: The Inner Chambers – Coming in 2023

Fumi Yoshinaga’s manga masterpiece Ōoku: The Inner Chambers will be adapted into an anime for the first time. Inspired by the Ōoku, the historic women’s quarters of the Edo Castle, this tale unravels the history of the inner chambers, where gender roles have been reversed. When a mysterious plague causes a rapid decline in the male population, the nation’s women are forced to take up the central roles of authority in Edo society. Curious as to why women take the names of men when succeeding the family line, Yoshimune, the eighth shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate, consults an archive of the Ōoku, which goes back to the age of the third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu. As she reads through it, Yoshimune begins to unravel the history of the inner chambers.

Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune – Coming in May 2023

This upcoming animated series is adapted from a brand-new military science fiction novel from Carlo Zen, who made his refreshing debut with The Saga of Tanya th eEvil. Akira Ihotsu is a young man who spends his days rebelling against an oppressive society on a future Earth, which is ruled and controlled by Shoren, the Pan-Star System Trade Federation. One day, he is scouted by Pupkin, a “cook” for Shoren, and volunteers to join the planetary orbital infantry force “Yakitori” — a brutal unit whose missions average a shocking death rate of 70%. Along with misfits from several other nations, Akira makes a stand against his pre-determined fate.

Onmyoji – Coming in 2023

The supernatural mysteries focusing on this historical figure in the subsequent series have been told across many forms of media, including manga, live-action and theater performances, but this Netflix Series is the first time they will receive an anime adaptation. Based on the original work’s setting and with additional original episodes, this series brings forth yet-untold stories of the great onmyoji Abe Seimei and his partner Minamoto Hiromasa as they untangle strange cases surrounding humans and demons.

Pluto – Coming in 2023

Praised by many as a masterpiece, the manga PLUTO is based on Osamu Tezuka’s Astro Boy ‘The Greatest Robot on Earth’ arc from 1964 and created by Naoki Urasawa (20th Century Boys, Yawara!, Master Keaton) and his long-time co creator Takashi Nagasaki.
