The much-anticipated expansion for War of the Ring: The Card Game, titled ‘Against the Shadow’ will debut at GenCon 2023!

War of the Ring: The Card game has been a constant staple in our table as of recent as the game evokes and encapsulates all the theme and meatiness of its bigger brother – War of the Ring and turns it into a easy to learn, team-based strategy card game based in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.

Here’s the scoop from Ares Games‘ press release:

July 24th, 2023 – Ares Games will be at Gen Con 2023 (Booth #541, August 3-6, Indianapolis), presenting several new releases and upcoming games, previews, and events. Attendees will have the chance to try and purchase the family and party game Ensemble, the economic game The Rich and The Good, and the euro-thematic game Cangaceiros, and the first copies of the upcoming Against the Shadow, the solo and cooperative expansion of War of the Ring: The Card Game, the roleplaying game Fantasy World, and the observation balloons Caquot M/Ae 800 Drachen and new Nieuport 16 packs of WW1 Wings of Glory.

The game designer Ian Brody, author of Quartermaster General and War of the Ring – The Card Game, will be the special guest of Ares Games at the show. Ian will present the preview of Quartermaster General East Front, the first 2-player game using the popular Quartermaster General game system, and he will be a judge at the War of the Ring The Card Game – GenCon Grand Tournament, on Saturday and Sunday.

Another future release to be presented for the first time at Gen Con is the long-awaited third expansion for War of the Ring board game, Kings of the Middle-earth. It will focus on the role of the rulers of the Free Peoples, and their weaknesses, expanding the part they played in the story, with new figures and rules to bring to life Théoden, Denethor, Dáin, Brand, and Thranduil.
