Infinix teases color-changing concept GT phone

Infinix has quite the interesting prototype making rounds in the esports scene.

A mysterious Infinix prototype has been making waves at international esports tournaments, featuring revolutionary electrochromic technology. By this, we mean that the device’s back panel has the capability to physically transform, color-wise, in real-time. The unbranded concept model, believed to be part of Infinix’s GT series lineup, represents a bold leap forward in gaming phone design.

The device caught attention when Malaysian esports figure Nureddy Nursal, known as Daddyhood and founder of MPL MY S12 champions Homebois, was spotted using the prototype. Daddyhood, who has been instrumental in developing grassroots esports talent through his organization, praised the technology’s potential to energize the mobile gaming community.

Unlike traditional RGB lighting found on most gaming phones, Infinix’s concept uses electrochromic materials similar to those in aircraft windows and luxury car sunroofs. The technology works through liquid crystal molecules that align to create a matte black finish during standby mode. When voltage is applied, these molecules rotate to reveal hidden textures, colors, and animations triggered by specific phone events like incoming calls, game launches, or camera usage.

The innovation puts Infinix ahead of tech giants like Apple, which recently patented electrochromic technology for Apple Watch bands but hasn’t moved beyond conceptual phases. While Apple focuses on accessory-level applications, Infinix is integrating responsive materials directly into the smartphone’s structural body, creating what the company calls “living design.”

The prototype utilizes third-generation electrochromic technology, featuring flexible films that are thin, stable, and energy-efficient compared to earlier iterations that were thick, slow, and power-hungry. This advancement makes real-world smartphone applications feasible for the first time.

  • Gen 1 – Solid-State: Thick, slow, and toxic—used in architectural glass
  • Gen 2 – Liquid-State: Faster, but fragile and power-hungry
  • Gen 3 – Flexible Films: Thin, safe, stable, and ready for real-world application

The Infinix concept gaming phone is based on Gen-3 materials, combining flexible electrochromic film with smart voltage control to deliver adaptive visuals in real time. It’s not production-ready—but it is fully functional.
