GCash assures systems secure amidst alleged data breach

As always, keep all your accounts secure. Especially the ones for GCash.

GCash has dismissed allegations of a data breach following reports that user information was being sold on the dark web. The mobile wallet giant released a statement on Monday addressing online posts claiming that customer data had been compromised and was circulating in underground marketplaces. Initial forensic analysis found no evidence of a security breach in its systems. They claim that the alleged dataset being circulated does not match its internal data structure and appears to be fabricated or sourced elsewhere.

The investigation revealed that the alleged dataset includes individuals who are not GCash users, and that many entries appear incomplete, inconsistent, or invalid. These findings strongly indicate that the material being circulated did not originate from GCash. They emphasized that all customer accounts and funds remain secure, with no evidence of any breach in its systems at this time.

GCash also stated that the security and privacy of its users remain its highest priority, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding customer data and maintaining the trust of millions of Filipino users. The incident highlights growing concerns about cybersecurity in the Philippines’ rapidly expanding digital finance sector, where mobile wallets have become essential for everyday transactions. They emphasized that all customer accounts and funds remain secure, with no evidence of any breach in its systems at this time. The digital payment provider said it immediately launched an investigation upon learning of the allegations, working with cybersecurity experts and relevant authorities to verify the claims.

GCash is coordinating closely with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), the National Privacy Commission (NPC), and the Cybercrime Investigation and Coordinating Center (CICC) to validate information from all possible sources and ensure system protection.

Customers can access the GCash Help Center and use the customer service chatbot Gigi on the GCash app, or call the hotline at 2882.
