At Mobile World Congress 2026, OPPO and Mediatek put the spotlight on their new on-device AI tech in the “AI for Life” keynote.
During the keynote, Jason Liao, President of the OPPO Research Institute, talked about the collaboration between the two companies. While this partnership has been around for quite some time now, their new goal is to accelerate on-device AI deployment on smartphones. For OPPO, this partnership is one part of its “On-device Compute” strategy, which aims to deliver more personalized AI experiences.
“On-device Compute is a cornerstone of OPPO’s AI strategy, making AI a perceptible, real-time experience integrated into everyday usage,” said Liao. This is being accelerated thanks to MediaTek chipsets. Specifically, the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 platform, which powers the Find X9 series, will soon be able to run OPPO’s on-device AI Translate and AI Portrait Glow features.

While there are plenty of AI translation services, most of these require a strong and stable internet connection. Given that there are times users will be in places with weak signal conditions, on-device AI translation promises to deliver in these situations. According to OPPO, this on-device translation solution has an average 15% improvement in accuracy over conventional translation services.
Meanwhile, AI Portrait Glow is another on-device AI feature that aims to deliver even more enhanced portraits, even in challenging environments. This is also designed to work without internet connectivity, so that users can enjoy great portraits wherever they are.
OPPO and MediaTek also previewed Omni, the first on-device full-modal AI model that’s designed for multi-modal understanding and interaction. Omni supports voice, video, and text inputs, and it enables live scene understanding and interactive Q&A directly on a smartphone. Essentially, you can think of it as an AI assistant that works without a connection.

While these AI advancements were big highlights at MWC, the MediaTek booth also showcased the latest range of OPPO devices. There, attendees got to try out the Find X9 Pro’s on-device AI capabilities, along with its OPPO Hasselblad Teleconverter for photography.
More details on the rollout of these new AI features will be shared soon.
