AMD Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package brings more memory capacity, better performance

In such challenging times in the realm of tech, AMD answers with the Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package (MoP).

Engineers are now turning to AMD to solve the critical memory bottlenecks found in high performance AI setups. This strategic shift comes at a time when a global memory-chip shortage is squeezing consumer tech, driven by a massive surge in data center AI demand that has left other markets supply-constrained. As embedded applications like 8K video, 5G wireless, and terabit networking evolve, they require significantly more memory capacity and performance to prevent data movement from becoming a bottleneck. To address these challenges, the company has introduced the Versal Premium Gen 2 Memory on Package (MoP), the first adaptive SoC to integrate LPDDR5X directly within the package.

The MoP technology represents a fundamental change in architectural design by utilizing an organic substrate rather than a complex silicon interposer, which simplifies the manufacturing process and offers significant supply chain advantages. By placing LPDDR5X-9000 components just 0.4 mm away from the compute die, the system achieves a massive 288 GB/s of bandwidth and 32 GB of capacity. This integration is particularly transformative for space-constrained environments, as it reduces board area by approximately 60% and eliminates months of development work previously spent on complex PCB memory routing and validation.

The new devices are engineered for the rigorous demands of aerospace, defense, and industrial sectors. Unlike data-center-aligned High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) that often lacks industrial temperature support, the Versal MoP is qualified for harsh environments ranging from -40°C to 110°C. It also supports a 15-year lifecycle to align with long-term program requirements in avionics and radar signal processing. Security is also bolstered, as the on-package design reduces the physical attack surface by removing board-level access to memory signals.

AMD Versal Premium Gen 2 MoP devices begin sampling at the end of 2026 with production shipments expected to begin in the second half of next year. For more information, check out the official website.
