Acer has been making interesting marketing partnerships as of late. A bit far back the tech and innovation company known for producing consumer and gaming laptops and notebooks partnered with Casio for their Time For Us G-Shock Promo. Then a few months after, Acer partnered with SM for a more consumer-driven Christmas giveaway entitled Malayang Pasko. This time around, the company has partnered with one of the most staple name in travel luggage – Samsonite.
According to Acer, this “back-to-school” promo is especially made with millennials in mind particularly with their penchant for travel. “If there’s one thing we’ve learned about millennials, it’s that they are very passionate individuals who are unstoppable if they are truly motivated,” shares Sue Ong-Lim, Acer Philippines’ Sales and Marketing Director. “Travel is, without a doubt, one of their strongest motivations. This is why we’ve partnered with Samsonite, a household name when it comes to travelling, to help us propel this cause forward. Hand in hand, we are hopeful that we will be able to not only motivate our millennials, but also reward them for their hard work by fueling their wanderlust.”
With this thrust, Acer and Samsonite will be giving away carry-on luggages worth Php 15,500 for every purchase of qualified Acer and Predator laptops, Acer Projectors and Acer Desktops.
But more than the freebie, Acer truly pivoted their marketing from a product-centric, spec-heavy barrage of numbers and whatnot to capture the essence of their products and how this empowers people. This is shown fully in their short film #CarryOn directed by Ms. Irene Villamor, known for her works in Camp Sawi and Meet Me in St. Gallen. The film depicts how young people turn to travel as a way to cope, find meaning and re-energize their passion in the face of whatever obstacles (herculean or otherwise) come their way.
“Travel inspires a different form of education – it makes you learn about new environments, expose you to different cultures and gives you a clearer view of the world,” says Ms. Ciely Buenaviaje, Country Head of Samsonite Philippines.
And while getting a luggage will not necessarily make you reach out for your wallet, hit the stores and buy an Acer laptop, it does matter when you’re in the decision-making process already. A 15k premium item is a huge deal and can swing your consideration to the brand. That was my experience when I was picking out a laptop earlier this year. You’re trying to find the best compromise of specs, price and value-added deal so that your purchase can be deemed “sulit”.
