After years of no proper updates, the Yuri on Ice: Ice Adolescence movie is officially canceled, as confirmed by the show’s production committee and studio.

The movie was announced years ago, and while fans still hoped it would be released at some point, things weren’t looking great. After all, anime studio MAPPA removed the film from its website back in October 2022.

Thus, it wasn’t too surprising when the film’s cancelation was announced via its official X (formerly Twitter) account. There, a message was included in both English and Japanese from the film’s production committee and studio MAPPA.

According to the statement, the Yuri on Ice movie was canceled due to “various circumstances.” The statement did not go into much detail regarding the decision to cancel the film.

Given that Yuri on Ice continues to be a beloved anime series, the film’s cancelation got a lot of strong reactions from fans online, with many expressing their disappointment, especially considering how the anime series has not yet gotten a proper follow-up.

While it wasn’t mentioned in the statement, a previous interview with MAPPA CEO Manabu Otsuka revealed that the studio found the Yuri on Ice TV anime’s earnings to be insignificant.

Even though the original anime series wasn’t a massive hit financially for the studio (unlike MAPPA’s other big hits), it’s still a shame that the Yuri on Ice movie was canceled. After all, the show continues to have a large and active fanbase.

With the movie’s cancelation, it’s not clear if Yuri on Ice will ever get a new project. Hopefully it gets one at some point.
