Fallout 76’s biggest free update yet brings players to the Burning Springs

Coming just in time for Fallout Season 2!

Fallout 76 is set to receive its biggest free update ever, adding the Burning Springs, arriving just in time for Season 2 of the TV show.

Fans of the show already know that Season 2 will follow Lucy and The Ghoul into the blood-soaked, bullet-ridden sands of New Vegas. To echo that western, desert theme, Fallout 76 is expanding westward into the post-apocalyptic deserts of Ohio. The new region, called The Burning Springs, is as large as The Mire region and will serve as the stage for the update aptly titled Blood and Rust.

A New Frontier: The Burning Springs

The Burning Springs isn’t just a new map zone—it’s a full-on expansion of Fallout 76’s world. Players can expect new storylines, quests, characters, factions, and activities, along with fresh weapons, armor, and power armor. Both public and instanced events will be part of the mix, ensuring there’s something to chase whether you’re a casual explorer or a hardened veteran like me.

One of the most exciting additions is the return of The Ghoul, voiced once again by the incredible Walton Goggins. But remember, Fallout 76 is the earliest entry in the series’ timeline, while the show is the latest. That means we’ll be meeting a younger version of The Ghoul—visually the same, but still on the path toward the legend we see on screen.

Bounties and the Hunt

The Ghoul will serve as the quest giver for a brand-new activity: Bounties. These bounty hunter jobs come in two flavors.

  • Grunt Hunts: Smaller, more manageable contracts that can be tackled solo.
  • Head Hunts: Larger-scale missions that function as Public Events, offering greater rewards but demanding more firepower to survive.

Both types of hunts will reward players with legendary weapons and armor, making them a compelling reason to keep returning to The Ghoul’s side.

New Landmarks and Factions

The Burning Springs will feature over 20 new points of interest. Among them is Highway Town, a new player hub where survivors can rest, restock, and regroup before venturing deeper into the desert.

Then there’s the Rust Kingdom, ruled by the Rust King—an intelligent super mutant commanding an army of raiders and even tamed deathclaws. Interacting with him will be key to progressing through the Burning Springs storyline, and his forces promise to be some of the toughest challenges in the update.

Accessible to All Players

One of the best parts of this expansion is that there’s no level requirement to enter the Burning Springs. Whether you’re a new player or a seasoned veteran with endgame-level power, you can cross the newly repaired bridge west of Point Pleasant and step straight into Ohio.

The update also ties into Fallout 76’s ongoing lore. The Blue Ridge Caravan Company, after failing to establish trade routes in Skyline Valley, will now shift operations to Ohio. And for those who enjoy fishing, December’s elusive Axolotl can be caught in the waters of the Burning Springs—just remember the golden rule: if you can swim in it, you can fish in it. Also, the dev team hints at ‘funny’ effects the new enemies Rad Hogs experience when nuked– so head on over to those silos and launch a hot one at Burning Springs to see it for yourself.

Blood and Rust Awaits

There’s far more content packed into Blood and Rust than can fit into one article, but what’s clear is that this update is a turning point for Fallout 76. It’s ambitious, it’s massive, and it feels like the game is stepping into a bold new era.

Come December, West Virginia’s country roads may still take you home—but this time, they’ll also lead you into the searing sands of Ohio. And as someone who’s spent countless hours at the highest levels of Fallout 76, I can’t wait to chug a few RadAways and dive right back in.
