Square Enix teases potential NieR: Automata sequel in new video

We hope that "to be continued" means we'll get a proper follow-up.

It has been nearly a decade since the release of NieR: Automata, and it seems like Square Enix is finally getting ready for a sequel. At least, that’s what we, along with many fans across the world, are hoping for.

Recently, a new visual for NieR: Automata was shared on the series’ official X account (formerly Twitter), which celebrates the game’s new milestone of reaching 10 million units in shipments and digital downloads. The visual features Automata’s main characters – 2B, 9S, and A2 – along with a depiction of Emil made up of physical NieR: Automata game copies.

To go along with this creative visual, Square Enix also shared a new promo video. Aside from featuring game footage, the video is also a trip down memory lane for various other Automata projects, including the stage plays and the anime by A-1 Pictures.

The most significant thing about the video for fans is its ending. That’s because the video ended with the words “NieR: Automata to be continued…”, indicating that we might see a follow-up.

Of course, this is not an official confirmation that a NieR: Automata game sequel is in the works. After all, this can simply mean that more Automata-related projects will be made, whether it’s another in-person event or anime season. There’s also a possibility that the story will be continued in another medium, like in novel form. Still, the fact that there’s a “to be continued” message gives us hope that a sequel will be announced, especially considering that it has been nearly a decade since the game’s launch.

Even though Automata has not gotten a sequel, the IP has continued to be a popular collab partner. After all, we’ve seen plenty of games get NieR collab over the years, including titles like Stellar Blade and Granblue Fantasy Versus: Rising, among others.

So, even if this “to be continued” teaser isn’t for a proper game sequel, it’s fair to say that we’ll at least see 2B and the others in future game crossovers. Of course, we much prefer seeing them in the form of NieR: Automata 2.
