OPPO Reno15 5G: Exploring its Gaming Capabilities

Along with its striking looks and great cameras, the Reno15 5G is also a capable gaming partner!

Recently, OPPO launched the Reno15 Series 5G, a new lineup of phones that, aside from featuring great cameras, also promise to be great gaming partners.

While the lineup’s portrait capabilities, eye-catching design, and AI tech have gotten a lot of attention, their gaming performance should also be as impressive, thanks to their choice of processors and nifty performance- and connectivity-boosting features.

Given how promising they are, we wanted to find out if the Reno15 Series 5G actually delivers. To that end, we put the base OPPO Reno15 5G to test to see just how well it works as a gaming partner. We went with the standard Reno15 5G, as this should give us a good baseline for what to expect from the series, gaming-wise.

Previously, we reviewed the Reno15, and we found that it is indeed a great daily driver. There, we tested out its gaming capabilities, though now, we went ahead and tried out even more games in longer sessions to see how well it holds up.

About AI HyperBoost and LinkBoost

Before we get into our gaming experience, let’s first talk about the gaming-specific features that OPPO included with its newest premium mid-range lineup. First, users have plenty of useful software modes that give handy controls over things like notifications, so that you get an uninterrupted gaming experience.

There’s also the Reno15 5G, which has AI HyperBoost 2.0, OPPO’s software solution that enables users to enjoy smooth, high-FPS gameplay while staying cool to the touch. How it works is that HyperBoost uses adaptive frame stabilization and advanced thermal control to ensure sustained high performance, all without heating up the phone to a noticeable degree.

This is important, as there are phones that run games well at the start, but afterwards suffer from throttling due to heat. As such, managing temperature is key for any smartphone, especially a device that will be used for hours of gaming. Plus, keeping temperatures lower means you get better battery health in the long run.

Another useful addition is AI LinkBoost 3.0. This system combines hardware design with AI features to ensure connections are steady, whether on Wi-Fi or mobile data.

On the hardware side, the Reno15 5G has an optimized antenna layout and enhanced RF design, meaning users should get stable connections, even when gaming in areas with weak networks. As for Wi-Fi connectivity, AI LinkBoost 3.0 comes with AI Super Wi-Fi Booster, which promises to strengthen connectivity in crowded spaces. Plus, there’s AI Network Booster, which smartly analyzes latency and switches the phone to a priority channel for a more responsive connection while gaming.

To top it all off, the Reno15 5G runs on ColorOS 16 with OPPO’s Trinity Engine, an AI All-Scenario Scheduler that analyzes a user’s usage habits, and automatically adjusts the phone’s hardware to match.

Exploring the OPPO Reno15 5G’s Gaming Performance

The aforementioned hardware and AI features work in conjunction with the phone’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 4 mobile platform, paired with 12GB of RAM. Combining all of these, you should get a phone that’s a great match for gaming, whether it’s competitive multiplayer titles or more demanding RPGs.

During our gaming test, we tried out a variety of titles, including Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, which is still the most popular MOBA in the country. As expected, this game ran well at Max graphics settings. What’s even better is that, even after hours of playtime, the phone’s performance didn’t suffer, nor did it heat up noticeably. Plus, we can say that during our multiplayer matches, the connection stayed strong, both on Wi-Fi and mobile data.

The same was true for Asphalt Legends. On the Reno15 5G, this racing game looked and played great, as it was fast and responsive throughout our hours-long session. And yes, we also had no issues when it comes to heating.

Of course, we also tried out more demanding titles. One of these is Genshin Impact, which, while a fairly old game at this point, is still tough to run at higher settings. After downloading the game, we found that the Reno15 5G had enough power to run this game smoothly at the Medium graphics preset. Even though it’s still a fairly tough game to run at this setting, the Reno15 had no heating or throttling issues.

We also tried out Where Winds Meet, a newer game that can also be quite demanding. Again, as with Genshin Impact, Where Winds Meet ran smoothly on OPPO’s latest premium mid-ranger, even at a mix of Medium and High graphic settings.

So, when it comes to performance and connectivity on a variety of titles, the Reno15 5G delivers a great gaming experience. But that’s not all there is to it for gaming, as its design also makes it a great partner in terms of visuals and comfort.

Great Design for Gaming

For its display, OPPO packed the phone with a 6.59-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen with a 120hz refresh rate. As such, playing games is a treat on this phone’s display, especially with its bright colors and deep blacks.

Even though it’s a fairly large screen, the Reno15 5G surprisingly feels easy to hold. Other phones can feel rather unwieldy to hold and game on for long play sessions, but that’s not the case here. The Reno15 5G is incredibly comfortable to hold, given the slim and light design.

It also helps that the phone has flat edges, making it easier to grip, even when you opt to use the phone without a case. Of course, we recommend going with a case, which OPPO thankfully provides inside the box.

To top it all off, the Reno15 5G has a large 6,500mAh battery, meaning you can get hours of continuous gaming on a single charge. In fact, if you only play more casually, you can get over a day of use before needing extra juice. If you do need to charge, the phone has fast 80W wired charging, enabling it to reach 100% in well under an hour.

As we mentioned above, the OPPO Reno15 5G is touted for its photography capabilities and brilliant design, but it also delivers when it comes to gaming.
