HarmonyOS 6.1 beta set to go live, eligible devices revealed

HarmonyOS 6.1 just launched, and is likely to reach Philippine soil sooner than we thought.

It’s been a hot minute since HarmonyOS 6.1 was revealed, and the first round of beta tests should be rolling out. Officially revealed alongside the Pura 90 series, the new operating system upgrade introduces a suite of robust security enhancements designed to give users unprecedented control over their personal data. That aside, the upcoming HarmonyOS 6.1.1 (24) Beta 1 will introduce advanced camera changes and new contextual features for starters.

A major highlight is the refined encryption sharing feature, which now includes a limited-time viewing option. This allows users to precisely dictate the duration and the number of times a recipient can access a specific file. To further prevent unauthorized dissemination, files can be restricted from being forwarded or screenshotted, and automatic watermarking is applied to discourage malicious sharing.

The security architecture is significantly bolstered by the new Star Shield anti-fraud system. With a single tap, this feature intelligently scans for risks across calls, applications, and websites. It is specifically engineered to intercept high-frequency scams, such as those involving fake customer service representatives or fraudulent online shopping platforms. Notably, the system now features deepfake detection during video calls and allows for family account monitoring, where users receive alerts if a relative is targeted by a suspicious caller.

Privacy is further refined through an updated App Lock and real-time permission monitoring. Users now receive instant alerts if an app attempts to access the camera, microphone, or location data during an active call, ensuring no data leaks occur in the background.

HarmonyOS 6.1 is entering the market with an extensive compatibility roadmap. The stable version is currently rolling out to flagship smartphones including the HUAWEI Mate 80 and Mate 70 series, the Pura 80 and Pura 70 series, and the foldable Mate X7 and X6 lines. Tablet users are not left behind, with the MatePad Edge and the 2025 editions of the MatePad Pro 13.2-inch also receiving the update. For those on the cutting edge, a public beta is available for the Mate X5, nova 14, and several MateBook PCs.

HUAWEI has also signaled that support for the WATCH GT 6 series and FreeBuds Pro 5 is now active, with more smart home devices and routers expected to join the ecosystem soon.
