Visa brings easy contactless fare collection to LRT-2

No cash in your pocket for the LRT? Visa's got you.

Commuters can breathe a sigh of relief as Visa is expands their contactless payment technology to all thirteen stations of the LRT-2 network. This major initiative, completed in collaboration with the Department of Transportation, Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, and other key stakeholders, marks the company’s fourth major cashless transit project in the Philippines. By introducing automated fare collection, the project seeks to accelerate the digitization of payments while significantly enhancing the daily urban transit experience for local commuters. This transition aligns Metro Manila with other leading urban centers in the region, removing common barriers for both local residents and international tourists who increasingly expect seamless, card-based payment options when traveling.

Commuters can now enjoy more secure and efficient journeys by using their debit or credit cards, QR codes, and NFC-enabled mobile devices across the entire line. With over 160,000 daily passengers relying on the rail system, which connects Manila to the province of Rizal, the shift to an open-loop system is expected to streamline the boarding process and reduce physical bottlenecks at ticket booths. Research from the Visa Economic Empowerment Institute suggests that these modern transit systems could boost total ridership by up to 10 percent, as 45 percent of commuters across the Asia-Pacific region admit they would take more trips if paying fares were easier.

According to Jeffrey Navarro, the brand’s Country Manager for the Philippines, this expansion signifies a deep commitment to improving overall urban mobility and boosting national productivity. The launch follows the success of Visa’s cashless transit projects for the MRT-3 as well as bus systems in Cebu, Mandaue, and Bacolod.
