RGG Studio reveals Stranger Than Heaven cast, settings, Winter release, and more

The game stars Ado, Snoop Dogg, and many other notable names

After getting a trailer back in March, SEGA and RGG Studio have now revealed more details about Stranger Than Heaven, including its cast and release date. Specifically, Xbox hosted a livestream that featured a meaty showcase of RGG Studio’s new title.

The latest showcase was quite a meaty one, as it revealed lots of details about the game, including its story, cast members, gameplay, and release window.

As most fans expected, Stranger Than Heaven is indeed a prequel to Yakuza, as the trailer’s opening scene mentions the Tojo Clan. Even though it’s connected to the Yakuza series, it promises to be an evolution in terms of gameplay and scope.

You can check out the game’s new trailer here:

As previously revealed, Stranger Than Heaven is a large-scale game, as it is set across five different eras. While it starts in 1915, the game will take players to the late 20s, early 40s, early 50s, and mid 60s.

The game’s story is described as:

San Francisco, 1915. The story opens with a young man slipping aboard a suspicious ship under cover of night.

And so begins the story of Makoto Daito—a teenager born to an American father and a Japanese mother.

Labeled an outcast for his appearance, Makoto sinks further into isolation with the untimely passing of his parents. He decides to move to Japan, his mother’s homeland, in hope of a better life.

If America held no place for him, then surely Japan would.

With nothing to his name, a fateful encounter aboard the ship sets Makoto‘s life on a path that will change everything.

What awaits Makoto in Japan? And where will his long journey ultimately lead him?

Also revealed is the game’s stacked cast. While previous Yakuza games already feature many notable names (such as Takeshi Kitano in Yakuza 6), this upcoming game is the most star-studded RGG game yet.

To be exact, the game features Yu Shirota, Dean Fujioka, Snoop Dogg, Moeka Hoshi, Tori Kelly, Akio Otsuka, Tokuma Nishioka, Satoshi Fujihara (OFFICIAL HIGE DANDISM), Cordell Broadus, Ado, and Bunta Sugawara.

Sugawara is best known for starring in the iconic Yakuza film series, Battles Without Honor and Humanity. While he passed away back in 2014, RGG Studio got the formal consent from his family to have his likeness appear in the game. Sugawara’s character is voiced by Takashi Ukaji, an actor who shared a close connection with Sugawara.

These characters were shown in the trailer, though not a lot of details have been shared about them so far. We do expect that more info will be shared in the months leading up to the game’s launch.

What we do know is that the game’s main theme song is titled “Stranger Than Heaven,” and it’s performed by Snoop Dogg, Satoshi Fujihara (Official HIGE DANdism), Ado, and Tori Kelly. These four also appear as characters in the game.

Also highlighted was the game’s combat. While it will feature beat-em-up gameplay like the Yakuza games, it promises to feature a more evolved combat system, as players will have specific control of protagonist Makoto Daito’s right and left arms. Players will also be able to wield various weapons, including knives, hammers, and swords.

Finally, RGG Studio revealed the five main settings of the game and their respective years:

  • 1915 – Kokura, Fukuoka, home to one of the world’s largest steelworks, bustling with hardworking laborers.
  • 1929 – Kure, Hiroshima, home to Japan’s largest naval shipyard, under strong influence of organized crime.
  • 1943 – Osaka, Minami, western Japan’s largest entertainment district, set against a backdrop of rising global tensions.
  • 1951 – Atami, Shizuoka, a postwar hotspot that became synonymous with tourism in Japan.
  • 1965 – Shinjuku, Tokyo, one of Japan’s most iconic entertainment districts to this day. A city alive with chaos and energy.

Stranger Than Heaven launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in Winter.
