In case you missed it, Gundam Rogue Orbit was announced at Summer Game Fest last week, and it’s an exciting new title for many Gundam fans.
While we’ve seen plenty of Gundam games before, this upcoming title is shaping up to be the most exciting Gundam game in recent years. After all, this game is not a multiplayer-first title. Instead, it’s a single-player experience featuring a new universe, with some intriguing new Mobile Suits.
In case you missed it, you can check out the game’s announcement trailer here:
While Bandai Namco didn’t reveal much about the game, we did get the official premise. It reads:
Suit up for humanity. Become the pilot you were born to be. Step into the cockpit as the pilot of Gundam Helix and join a rag-tag crew of unsung soldiers as humanity faces a powerful, unknown threat.
Note that this game is set in a new universe, meaning you won’t need to have watched any of the previous Gundam anime or have played the other Gundam games to understand what’s going on in the game’s story.
We don’t know a lot of story details, but we do at least have some info on the game’s main characters. Players will take on the role of RE-X, who is the pilot of the new Gundam Helix (the “hero” Mobile Suit shown in the trailer).
Also shown in the trailer is Sophia, the heroine of Rogue Orbit. Bandai Namco describes her as a “mysterious girl who monitors RE-X’s situation.”
We didn’t get a proper gameplay showcase, but we did get some gameplay snippets near the end of the trailer. From the looks of it, this game seems to be like a Gundam take on something like Armored Core.
In an interview with Polygon, the game’s producers, Yuya Tomiyama and Shinya Satake, said that it’s hard for them to compare Rogue Orbit’s gameplay to other titles, but they did mention that the key gameplay focus is the seamless switching between air and ground combat.
Tomiyama and Satake also mentioned that this is the first time that they’re creating a new Gundam project with a video game first. This makes Rogue Orbit special, as other Gundam games are either crossovers of different Gundam universes or are based on a specific anime. As such, this game is something that big fans of the series should definitely watch out for.
Gundam Rogue Orbit is coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC sometime in 2027.
