Yup, you read the title right. The newly announced HUAWEI Pura 90s Series is now fitted with 5G-capable chips! But this isn’t the only thing exciting with the latest photography-centric flagship from HUAWEI. Prior to the official global launch, our friends from HUAWEI Philippines lent us a unit to play around with and we’ve been using it as our main camera to document everything that’s happening here in Malaysia for the Global Launch of the said phone – and then some.
While we still need time to really tinker with this series, particularly with the HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max, with the time that we have with the unit, we’re thoroughly happy with the device.
The Quintessential HUAWEI Phone

In a time when flagship phones have been stepping into ultra-luxury status, HUAWEI redefines the experience once again by offering a host of ultra-fun and eye-popping colorways for the Pura 90s Series. But while a lot of people may just see it as a fun little gimmick, it feels more like a call back to when HUAWEI first introduced the ombre color effect to an android flagship phone with the HUAWEI P20. This, I feel, is HUAWEI referencing itself and recalling a time when the brand was at the height of its game. Amidst a sea of single-tone colored flagship smartphones, the vibrant two-tone colors found on the Pura 90s Series are a testament to the brand’s confidence.
The Ocean Blue colorway is also the first time that the two-tone painting technique is seen on the side bezels of a smartphone. This is apparently hard to do, and once again, showcases the brand’s commitment to showcasing their best innovations yet.
Choose among vacation-ready colors like Orange Ocean and Sunset Purple or go a bit more luxe classic with Blush Gold and Graphite Black.
Imaging at its finest – Clear shots at 20x Zoom

Of course, the crux of any Pura-Series device would it its amazing camera capabilities and boy, oh, boy did HUAWEI stack a lot of goodies especially with the Pura 90s Pro Max. The HUAWEI Pura 90s Pro Max is equipped with an industry first Ultra-large 1/1.28” RYYB sensor for it’s 50MP main camera and its 200MP Periscope Telephoto Camera. This is then paired with an equally large 40MP Ultra-wide camera.
While it does away with the mechanical zoom mechanism found on the HUAWEI Pura 80 Ultra last year, the Pura 90s Pro Max’s camera module is significantly lighter yet still able to perform well even on zoomed-in images. In fact, the brand touts that it can give color-accurate and visibly vivid images even at 20x Zoom – for both photos AND videos! That’s a bold claim and we’re definitely going to be testing this out against other flagship devices. But for now, check out some of the amazing shots we took while here in Malaysia.
