To celebrate the release of Across the Spider-Verse, Marvel and Shueisha recently announced the new Spider-Man: Octopus Girl manga.

So, why is it called Octopus Girl? Well, this upcoming manga will star Doctor Octopus as he wakes up from a coma inhabiting the body of a Japanese schoolgirl named Otoha Okutamiya.

Based on the preview image for the manga, a Spider-Man will be involved in the story. Though it’s not confirmed which Spidey this is; after all, this manga is a spin-off of the Spider-Verse films.

For Spider-Man fans, this might be a familiar premise as it’s reminiscent of The Superior Spider-Man series. In that comic, Doc Ock manages to transfer his consciousness to the body of Peter Parker, thus becoming the new Spider-Man.

Of course, what’s interesting about that is Doc Ock became Spider-Man, but in this new manga, he will instead be a schoolgirl which begs the question — what kind of story will Octopus Girl have?

Well, we have to wait a bit longer to find out. But what we do know is that the series is that it’s made by Hideyuki Furuhashi and Betten Court of the My Hero Academia: Vigilantes spin-off.

This upcoming Octopus Girl manga will be released in Shonen Jump+ on June 20, 2023. For now, there’s no info yet on an international release.

Meanwhile, Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse is now screening in PH cinemas, and in our review, we called it a strong contender for best animated film of the year.
