The time has finally come. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is here for everyone to play. Whether you’re exploring the expansive world or facing off against iconic foes, the systematic refinements in Rebirth are nothing short of amazing. In order to help you immediately enjoy the game to its fullest extent, here are quick and simple Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tips for beginners.

We have spent over 100 hours exploring every nook and cranny of this game, we cannot emphasize enough just how much we recommend this masterpiece.  Whether you’re a newcomer to the series or a returning fan, these tips will ensure you make the most out of your time in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth.

Folios and Synergy Skills

At the very core of FF7 Rebirth is the dynamic between Cloud and the rest of the main characters. This design philosophy is rooted in both the narrative and gameplay progression.

You’ll be progressing through special skill trees called Folios. These contain different stat buffs and unique abilities per character. This will be first introduced once you get to the town of Kalm and make your way to the library. A brief introduction of the levelling system and skill trees will be given by the librarian, and you are given the opportunity to pick your first Folios for each member of the party.

Once you’ve set out exploring, you can go to various Maghnata Automats scattered throughout the open world. These are the designated places where you can level up without having to go back and forth to Kalm’s library. It is worth noting that respecing is free and you can do it any time.  As your party level increases, so does the power of your Folios. The main event of which are the Synergy abilities. These are special moves Cloud can perform with each member of the party. These can range from powerful attacks, defensive maneuvers, and party-wide buffs. The stronger Cloud’s bond is with each of the party members, the more powerful the Synergy abilities will be. Speaking of which…

Relationship system

In the original Final Fantasy VII, the relationship system was a relatively hidden mechanic that determines who you go on a date with at the Golden Saucer. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth takes this to a whole new level, as it does with everything else in the game. When outside of combat, pressing L1 on the DualSense will reveal facial expressions on top of each party member, signifying how your relationship is with them.

You can directly increase/ decrease this by accomplishing certain tasks such as choosing different dialogue options or completing various side quests. A party member will express their own personal stake in any given task and depending on what you choose to do, will determine whether or not they agree or disagree.

This completely recontextualizes FF7’s relationship mechanic and makes it a more active part of the game. If you weren’t invested enough with the iconic characters already, this will definitely make you fall in love with each and every single one of them even more.

Transmutation

There’s now crafting in Final Fantasy VII! Before you panic, it’s not as oppressive as it may be in other titles. In Rebirth, you will be given a Transmuter, a useful device that you can use as you progress through the open world. The main task of which is crafting various items that can help make your adventure a little bit easier.

It is not a hard requirement to progress through the main story, but it does come in handy in the various optional content the game has.

The Transmuter requires that you level it up by crafting fairly simple potions. You will only receive XP for it for every first time you craft an item. The higher the level your Transmuter is, the more powerful items you can craft. A lot of which you’ll be needing if you want to see the rest of what Rebirth has to offer.

Side quests and Open world activities

One of the best things about Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is how much it fleshes out the world and the things you can do in it. What was just a mere 20 or so minutes in the original, is now a full-fledged open world that one can sink dozens of hours into.

Don’t worry, this is not the typical open world filler content that we’ve all come to get tired of. The optional content in Rebirth all has their own rewards worth chasing, whether it be in a literal sense such as gear or more thematic such as added narrative context.

Nearly everything you do in Rebirth services the way you know more about the world and the characters that live in it. Before you know it, you’ve 100% an area not because you just want to grind away XP and mark a checklist, but because you were too engrossed in the world building that comes with every side content.

Weapon upgrade system

Weapons in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth increase in power the more you use them. As your weapon level increases, you’ll gain access to powerful weapon abilities tailored to suit your playstyle.

Unlocking these abilities allows for customization and fine-tuning of your weapons, enhancing their effectiveness in combat. Additionally, advancing your weapon’s level will unlock Weapon Ability Slots, providing opportunities to further augment your weapon’s capabilities by assigning additional abilities.

If you want a more streamlined experience without having to worry too much about upgrading, there is an Auto-Upgrade system in which you can choose whether or not to prioritize Attack or Defense.

And there you have it, a quick and simple list of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth tips for beginners. This is a game that everyone who owns a PS5 should get their hands on. It’s perfect for long-time fans, and an amazing reason to dive in for newcomers. Rebirth represents the best of the franchise and Square Enix as a developer, and we can’t wait to see just how everyone else will love this game as much as we have already for the past few weeks.
