A recent study has revealed that a considerable percentage of gamers have used online games to make friends and connect with other people.
While this may not be too surprising to many, given how many gamers today have friends that they’ve met while playing, it is interesting to see that a study has actually confirmed the fact that games have become major social gathering spaces.
This specific study happened in Thailand, and it was by YouGov, commissioned by The Elder Scrolls Online (ESO). The said study showed that 68% of players have used online games like ESO to make new friends. What’s more, the study revealed that one in five players (22%) more regularly keep in touch with their loved ones via online video games over more traditional communication methods like phone (13%) or video calls (14%).
Other interesting findings from the study include the fact that 17% of respondents believe that online gaming is better for maintaining relationships than sharing a meal out. While not a majority, the fact that a sizeable number of participants have this belief shows just how games have become important for friendships in an increasingly online world.
What’s more, the survey found that online gamers are more likely to play if they’re playing with someone else (31%). Meanwhile, it also confirmed how gaming is very much a big thing for the last two generational cohorts, with a significant number of Millennials (74%) and Gen Z (67%) players saying that they’ve made new friends online.
Also worth noting is that, in Thailand, urban folk (72%) are more likely to make friends through games compared to rural residents (56%). Still, the fact that rural residents have a strong desire to go online and make friends via games.
Finally, the study also shared that video games being an avenue for connection also has an impact on purchase decisions for Thai players. Specifically, 73% of respondents said that social features like guilds and in-game chats are important points to consider if they want to make a purchase in the game. Plus, 31% of players discover new games based on friend/family recommendations.
Regarding the findings, Game Director Rich Lambert said:
“For many players, teaming up to conquer dungeons in ESO has become one of the most rewarding parts of the online experience. In Thailand, we often see this spirit of cooperation extend beyond the game itself with experienced players guiding newcomers; reflecting the generous and community-focused nature of Thai culture.
Our research shows that one in three Thai gamers prefer playing online with others rather than going solo. MMORPGs like The Elder Scrolls Online provide the perfect space for connection. The freedom to role-play any character and shape your own adventure, and then share that journey with friends, is what makes the experience truly special.”
While this study was made in Thailand, we won’t be surprised if this is also the case in other countries in the region, and throughout the world for that matter. And as games continue to become even more popular, the share of players making friends online may get even bigger.
For players who already have friends in ESO, or want to give it a try and meet the community, The Elder Scrolls Online ‘Feast of Shadows’ Dungeon pack is out now on PC, with the console version coming out on September 4, 2025.
