At Summer Game Fest 2023, SEGA unveiled Sonic Superstars, a brand-new Sonic game that combines 2D side-scrolling and 3D graphics.

We already saw several Sonic releases since last year including the unique Sonic Frontiers which is a 3D entry with open world elements, along with the Sonic Origins remaster collection.

But this newest game in the long-running franchise is a brand-new entry, though it promises to be a throwback to the classic games in the series as it brings back the iconic 2D sidescrolling gameplay, but with modern 3D graphics.

You can check out the announce trailer from Summer Game Fest here:

As shown in the trailer, Superstars brings back the classic fast-paced sidescrolling action gameplay of the older games in the series. Though it features new zones and mechanics that should make it feel fresh for longtime fans, all while being accessible to newcomers.

Gameplay-wise, what sets this game apart from previous titles are the Emerald Powers which grant special abilities, including the ability to create clones mid-battle, dash through the air, and more. Plus, the game is the first mainline entry to feature local co-op with up to three other players.

Aside from the co-op mode, players will also have access to Tails, Kncukles, and Amy as they will be playable characters. The familiar characters must face off once again with Dr. Eggman who will be joined by a new enemy.

As for its story, the game’s premise is described as:

A new adventure begins for Sonic and his pals, Tails, Amy, and Knuckles, in the mysterious Northstar Islands, inhabited by gigantic creatures. With your newfound Emerald Powers, stop Dr. Eggman and Fang, who plan to use these creatures for their devious schemes!

Sonic Superstars will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC in Fall 2023.
